About Care UK

Care UK is a British company that provides social and health care. Care UK works with councils, doctors and Clinical Commissioning Groups to deliver support and care for older customers, people with mental health problems and learning disabilities Besides, the company offers a range of healthcare services intended for NHS patients. In 1982, it was initially founded as Anglia Secure Homes and later became Care UK PLC. In 1997, the Care UK company gained Care Solutions Limited, which is a British provider of residential services for those people with learning disabilities responsible for around 59 homes in Bradford, Newcastle, Staffordshire and Guildford. Then in 1998, the company took on additional 7 care homes based in the South Coast and Hampshire along with the acquisition of The Care Partnership.

In 2010 following a management buyout, the Care UK delisted right from the stock exchange. Hence, since that year, the company's leading shareholder has been Bridgepoint Capital. After two years, Bridgepoint Capital bought Harmoni from ECI Partners for around £50 million. Later, in January 2014 it was publicly known that Philippa Slinger, who was the former chief executive of the Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and troubled Heatherwood was to merge with Care UK.

After the Health and Social Care Act, 2012 came into use in April 2013, in 2014, by November Care UK had won 3 contracts over £104 million. In January 2018, following the death of an inmate at HM Prison Chelmsford and due to the criticism by the Prison Ombudsman, the Care UK company decided to announce that it would end its healthcare agreement as to the level of resource the prison service made accessibly was insufficient.

Care UK services

In 2018 the Care UK managed over 114 care homes with around 8,000 beds. Approximately 44% of the residents are now self-funding. The company helps more than 17,000 older people as well as those with health problems and disabilities through their home care services. As of 2019, the company’s NHS treatment centres, about 111 services together with out of hours primary care centres support over 18 million patient interactions per year.

The Care UK operates two clinical assessment and treatment centres (CATS) together with nine NHS treatment health centres, providing a wide selection of procedures for different conditions such as hip replacements, cataract surgery, and more. It is worth mentioning that in 2011, Care UK was named as the best performing health care provider for hip operations, by the independent research organisation - known as Dr Foster.

Care UK also runs 12 GP-led health care centre facilities offering walk-in services and multiple specialist mental health services that includes about 18 hospitals, homes, and residential treatment programmes intended especially for young customers who have, for instance, serious eating disorders. In 2013 a joint venture along with Sussex Partnership NHS Trust was founded to purchase around a 32-bed mental health rehabilitation unit in Gosport. It also aimed to provide a 24-bed self-contained accommodation unit later, in 2013.

The company's aim and strategy are to focus on the offering of primary and secondary NHS health care services. In May 2015 the Care UK sold mental health assets, including 322 beds, learning disability services group, to Partnerships in Care and Lifeways Group.

Later, in June 2015 the Care UK home care service which counted a revenue of around £72.2 million that supports approximately 13,000 customers across the whole UK and recruits employees of over 6,000 staff members was sold to Mears Group. Mears Group is considered to be the largest company offering out-of-hours health care services in England with more than 10 million customers. The company kept a £55 million agreement to run the North East London Treatment Centre based in Redbridge in September 2017, right after a bid by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, as well as after complaining about the conduct of Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge and Havering CCGs that mainly operated the tendering process.
