About Kahoot history

Kahoot! is a widely known and most loved game-based learning platform, which is commonly used as educational technology in various schools and other educational institutions. Kahoot’s learning games, so-called "kahoots", are user-generated multiple-choice quizzes that may be accessed simply through an internet browser or the Kahoot application. When using Kahoot for educational purposes, the platform highly helps teachers to review students' knowledge, for instance, for formative assessment, or can be used as a break from traditional classroom activities. Besides its different functions, Kahoot also consists of trivia quizzes.

Concerning the history of Kahoot creation, it should be mentioned that it all started back in 2012 when Johan Brand together with Jamie Brooker and Morten Versvik founded Kahoot. Kahoot was emerged as a result of a joint project by these three people in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Johan, Jamie, and Morten teamed up with Professor Alf Inge Wang and later, the team was joined by another member who was a Norwegian entrepreneur, called Åsmund Furuseth. Kahoot.it was officially launched in private beta at SXSWedu back in March 2013 and the beta was then released to the public in September 2013.

Kahoot development

Kahoot was mainly designed for social learning, with learners grouped around a shared screen such as a projector, an interactive whiteboard, or computer monitor. The site - Kahoot.it - can be used via some screen-sharing tools, including Skype and Google Hangouts. The Kahoot game design is such that its players are prompted to often look up from their devices. Hence, the gameplay is quite simple, all Kahoot players connect via using a generated game PIN which is shown on the common screen. The PIN is used to access a device and to be enabled to answer questions that are created by their teacher, trainer, business leader, or another person.

Questions included in Kahoot gameplay may be changed to award points. The creator may select whether the players can get 0 points, a maximum up to 1000, or even around 2000 points. The Kahoot points that the player gets are calculated up to how far can the player reach and how long it takes for the player to answer each question. The sooner the player answers the question, the more points he/she gets if the player answers them correctly. Kahoot points then are displayed on the leaderboard right after each question. It is possible that the player gets a streak, meaning that he/she or the team as a whole, answered more questions in sequence. The better the streak is, the more points the team will get while answering a question correctly.

Presently, Kahoot.it has implemented the so-called 'Jumble'. The Jumble questions challenge Kahoot players to put answers in the right order rather than choosing a single correct answer. It also provides a new experience that requires and encourages even more focus and attention from all players. Kahoot.it can also be played via different web browsers as well as through mobile devices by its internet interface. There is also an official app of Kahoot that may be easily downloaded from application stores and installed on users’ devices.
